Hotel Kvarner, Opatija

Hotel Kvarner was the first hotel in Opatija, and probably on the eastern coast of the Adriatic. It was built in 1884 on the site of previous vineyards that belonged to the Toma family, and the building construction lasted only ten months, involving craftsmen and building materials from all parts of the Monarchy. Zumberak Nature Park

Papuk Nature Park

Papuk is a significant mountain in the chain of the Slavonian mountains which closes the Požega valley on its northern side.

Vrana Lake Nature Park

Vrana Lake is the largest natural lake in Croatia, covering an area of 3,000 ha, 14 km long, about 2 km wide, with depth that does not exceed 5 metres.

The total area of the Nature Park is 5700 ha. In its north-western part the lake shores are covered with bull-rushes and reeds; this is an ornithological reserve which, in addition to harbouring numerous colonies of heron, also attracts the ibis. Read more

Hotel Imperial, Opatija

Hotel Imperial was the second hotel to be built in Opatija. As soon as it became evident that the Kvarner would not be able to accommodate the steadily increasing number of guests, the Southern Railways began building a new hotel, which was already opened in 1885 and named after the heiress to the throne Kronprinzessin Stephanie who, with her husband, attended its opening.

Wilhelm, the architect, on this occasion also offered his guests all the luxuries of that period, from central heating to a swimming pool and a cinematograph which were connected by corridors to the principal part of the hotel. Read more

Prvic island

The island of Prvić, covered in Mediterranean macchia, vineyards and olive-groves, with picturesque coves is located in the Šibenik archipelago near Vodice.

The island is 2.4 square kilometres in size and has only two inhabited towns, Prvić Luka and Šepurine, with over 400 inhabitants. The name Prvić (“the first one”) derives from the fact that it is the closest to the land, from which it is around 1,000 meters away. Read more

Ozalj Vivodina wine road

The 30 km long Ozalj-Vivodina wine-road in Karlovac County combines 11 of the best known wine manufacturers from this eminent wine-rich area into a unique whole. The wine-road stretches over 30 km from Vivodina to Vrhovac. The wine-road  was implemented by the Ozalj winegrowers’, winemakers’ and fruit-farmers’ association, in cooperation with the Karlovac County Tourist association. Read more

Slavonski Brod Fortress

The Fortress of Slavonski Brod is a first-class monument of 18th century baroque period architecture and occupies a prominent place in the European history of fortifications from the period.

In its appearance it is reminiscent of Diocletian’s palace in Split, but differs from it, however, in the method of its construction, as the Split palace is made of stone, while the Fortress in Slavonski Brod is made of earth and bricks. With deep water-filled and geometrically shaped moats it, in a somewhat dramatic way, symbolises the specific identity of Slavonia and its turbulent history. Read more

Malinska

Malinska is situated in woody bay on the western shores of the Adriatic Sea’s largest island – Krk, and has for ages drawn tourists to its tranquillity.

The Baska Tablet

The Baska tablet is probably the most famous monument of early Croatian literacy, dating from about 1100. Its size and weight are impressive: 2×1 m, 800 kg. According to Branko Fucic and Eduard Hercigonja, the language of inscription is Croatian – Chakavian with elements of liturgical Church Slavonic, and the script is Croatian Glagolitic. Read more
